Sweet Snowflake

Well, I did not see this comin'. Another Christmas card. I swear, I didn't do it on purpose.

You see, I bought a K&Company paper pack at Target and loved this pink and green patterned paper. Then I started looking at one of the stamps from my new PTI stamp set, Spooky Sweets II. Yes, that's right, the circular swirly piece that the snowflake is sitting on is actually from a Halloween set. The floral swirls matched perfectly with the patterned paper. Then I had to have something for inside the circle, right? Well, before I knew it, out comes a snowflake and another Christmas card was born. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

So a few things make this card a little different. First, the size. It's long - just the right fit for a business size envelope. Then there's the scalloped border. I cut the front cover so that I could add it to the card and still have the Kraft card base show through. Then, of course, there is that sweet little snowflake in the center. It's a chipboard piece that I covered with green patterned paper from the same paper pack. I used foam mounting tape for the whole center piece, to make it stand out from the card. The finihsing touch was to add some sparkle with my Stardust pen and a few touches of Liquid Pearls to add a touch more pink. I think it looks a bit like a snowflake sugar cookie! Yummy!

So, yes, I know it's still August (barely) and it's summer (barely, especially for those of us in Washington State), but I'm happy to be getting a head start on a few Chrsitmas creations. You're not too mad, are you? I promise I won't play Christmas music for another two months...or more!

P.S. I am almost done redecorating my blog, did you notice the changes? I have just a few more tweeks here and there. I still need to work on the tab thing. Thank goodness for a three day weekend!

Blog-orating

Is that what you call it when you redecorate your blog? Well, whatever it's called, that's what I'm doing! So, no, you didn't stumble upon the wrong website, it's just me changing things around. I still have a few more touches before it's done, so be sure to check back soon. Oh, and those tabs at the top of my banner...aren't they cool? Okay, so they don't work...yet. But soon, after I dust off my HTML skills and figure it all out. I wanted to incorporate them into my banner now, so that I could use them later. I'm hoping it's not too much later.

Color Inspiration Challenge

I stumbled upon Kristina Werner's blog recently and decided to play along with her weekly Color Inspiration Challenge. Above is her inspiration photo and the required colors to use in the project. So here's my take:

Certainly Celery and Chocolate Chip are two of my favorite Stampin' Up! colors to put together, and the other two pinks and the Very Vanilla look so great, too. I did some pretty simple layering on this card and broke out the Wise Owl set from Papertrey Ink. The flowers were punched out in two shades of pink and layered on top of each other. The finishing touch were little tiny buttons that I glued to the centers.

This was fun! I am definitely going to try out more of these challenges. They are a great way to get you going in a different creative direction! And how adorable is that chair from Pottery Barn Kids?!?

Papertrey Ink August Blog Hop

This month's Papertrey Ink Blog Hop challenge was to create something out of a CD case. And let me tell you, it was a puzzler for me right up until the last minute! After a lot of thought, I decided on this creation...a gift card holder. But wait, there's more (read on).

Before I get to the inside, let me tell you about the outside of the case. I covered the entire thing with beautiful patterned paper from the Crush collection by Crate Paper. I saw this, I loved it, I had to have it! I decided to cover the sides, too, to really transform the project and disguise it's original purpose (you can see it better in the second photo, below).

The front cover was embellished with a velvet trim layered on Dark Chocolate cardstock that I scalloped. Before adhering the trim, however, I added the brown satin ribbon for a tie. The focal point is a heart that I cut out of chipboard and covered with the back side of my patterned paper. I stamped a few flourishes on the heart and inked the edges. More brown satin ribbon is wrapped around the heart and a little tag was added with a few more touches of ribbon (if too much ribbon is wrong, I don't want to be right!). I love the sentiment here: "Enjoy the Moment." I thought it would be fitting for any occasion.

Now, on to the inside! Since my patterned paper was double-sided and the glue dried clear, I didn't need to cover the inside with paper.

Once I decided I'd make this a gift card holder, I quickly realized that once the recipient received it, they would likely want to use if for another purpose. So my challenge was to not use too much adhesive or do anything to the inside that would prevent it being used differently in the future. So let's talk about the left side.

I added another strip of my patterned paper layered onto the scalloped Dark Chocolate. But I only adhered it on the top and bottom, so it could easily be removed, yet still keep in place. The birthday verse was adhered using foam tape, which can easily be removed from the plastic case. Now the other side.

I used Kraft cardstock to make a folder of sorts to hold the gift card. I covered it with the same patterned paper and Dark Chocolate. The ribbon is tied on the front of the folder very strategically. Remember I said I didn't want to do anything permanent? The ribbon not only embellishes and give me a reason to tie on another tag, but it hold the gift card inside, right were it belongs until the recipient unties the ribbon. And the Kraft folder was adhered on all edges, with the exception of where the ribbon was inserted, so that later the ribbon can be pulled out and used in another way. Here is what it looks like when opened:

Now, can't you think of some other possibilities here? How about a little accordion album tucked inside? Or just one photo adhered to the inside of the folder with journaling included on the patterned paper "flap?" And the other side is wide open for more photos or journaling. And there you have it: The gift that keeps giving! Thanks for visiting! Can't wait to see what everyone else has put together!

Seein' Red

My order from Papertrey Ink (PTI) finally arrived yesterday! I was so excited to try out their new color, Pure Poppy. I ordered the cardstock, ink and ribbon to match.

After I opened everything up and sat down to create something, I quickly realized that I don't don't use red a lot, unless I'm making Christmas cards. Well, that has got to change, because this red shade is fab-ou-lous! And I love it paired with PTI's Kraft cardstock. I pulled out an old stamp set for this card and did some very quick coloring with my chalks and blender pen. My favorite part about this card is the embossed background! It takes so little effort, yet adds so much to your card. And to finish off those little dots, I dragged my New Canvas ink pad right over them to turn them white! The finishing touch to the card was to add the sentiment with some of my new satin ribbon. And to really finish it off, I used a little Stickles and my Stardust pen to give those simple little flowers a little bling.

I have so many ideas on how to use this new shade of red, and they aren't just about Christmas, either! Stay tuned!

A Taste of Scrapbooking

I think I mentioned before that I like scapbooking, but that I haven't quite been able to fully get into it. I'm trying some digital pages, and I like that a lot, but I still really like the feel of paper in my hands. When I came across these recipe pages I made a few years ago, it reminded me of a great way to get back into scrapbooking. These pages go much faster, especially since most of the page is taken up by the recipe itself. And because of the 6x6 size, it's a lot less intimidating than that huge blank 12x12. And who couldn't use a new recipe nicely displayed in their kitchen? Does anybody really do that?!

For this project I used Basic Grey patterned paper for my 6x6 base. Have I told you how addicted I am to fonts? Well, this is a great way to use them! I printed the recipe, stamped a random pattern using a branch/foliage image, then matted it on burgundy cardstock. I then added some punched leaves for an added embellishment.

The recipe layer was adhered to the base and I attached a piece of patterned paper across the front with a few bronze brads. I love all the Fall colors on this project!

So, another lesson learned today. I am definitely not giving up on scrapbooking! As a matter of fact, I may have to try another one of these recipe pages really soon! Or at least make the recipe!

P.S. The recipe is from my Paula Deen cookbook and is very tasty! I was going to include it in this post, but it's getting too late and I must go to bed! If you are interested, shoot me an email and I'll gladly send it your way! But I hope you're not counting calories y'all, because you know Paula spares no fat grams!

You Mean Everything To Me

Today's post is a quick one, because this card is really rather simple. I utilized one of the great features of Stampin' Up! products - the coordinating designer paper, ink and cardstock. And I also layered, layered, layered (one of my favorite things to do!).

I used the Always set from SU! on this card. I love this set! The bird was stamped with Chocolate Chip ink on Soft Sky cardstock. I stamped the floral image around the bird to create a "frame" of sorts, then slightly inked the edges. I like the tone-on-tone look you get when you use the same color ink on the same color cardstock. For a little shimmer (gotta do it!), once again I turned to my Diamond Stickles. As you may have guessed, that stuff never gets too far away from me! I added a little here, a little there, to highlight some of the floral detail on the bird.

The ribbon isn't SU!, but from Martha Stewart's Crafts collection. It just so happens to match perfecting with the Soft Sky. I got lucky on that one!

Whoo Hoo!

I just found out that I received an Honorable Mention in Papertrey Ink's Guest Star Stamper contest for August for my Owl Be Back...To School gift ensemble! I am so excited, you would have thought I won the whole enchilada. In some ways, this is better than winning because it was so unexpected. Thanks to all of you for your great comments on my project and for giving me the encouragement to try again next month!

A Little Gift

Does that altered box look familiar? I made it here, with a matching gift card. At the time, it didn't have a specific purpose, but this weekend I had a real use for it! I went to a little party yesterday and wanted to give the hostess a present. Something small, but it was also to serve as a late birthday present. I thought about the altered box and decided to made coordinating note cards to fit inside!

Because I was a little short on time, I needed the cards to be simple. I used paper from the Basic Grey Mellow collection, as I had on the box. For each card I simply rounded the corners, layered on the patterned paper, then added a simple sentiment to each card. I varied the sentiments, so that the cards could be used for a variety of purposes. The final touch was to add some ribbon and a brad and adhere to the card with foam tape. Simple, yet effective. But as I was finishing up the project, I realized one thing. I had used a dark cardstock base for my cards. Now, this isn't a problem for me, as I have a ton of pens that work on dark paper, but I realized that the average person does not. So I added a vanilla layer to the inside of the card:

Now the cards were fully functional and looked as cute on the inside as they did on the outside! And the hostess was very happy and impressed with her gift! Oh, it was nothing...

Owl Be Back...Bookplate Labels & Holder

This is my third (and final) post on the Owl Be Back...To School gift ensemble. This is the little hinged (altoid) tin that holds the bookplate labels.
These tins are great for a variety of uses (I made one here to hold a gift card). I knew when I started this set that I would in some way use the owl in connection with books. He's a wise owl, right? So I came up with the idea of bookplates! Bookplates are those labels that go inside your book to identify that it belongs to you. I created them by using Microsoft Word. I simply created text boxes, added a brown border, and typed in the text.

Once I had one exactly like I wanted it, I used copy and paste to fill an entire page. I then printed it on a whole sheet of label paper, cut each one out and rounded the corners with my corner rounder. The round corners really make it fit nice and neatly inside the tin. I stamped each label with the little owl from the Wise Owl set from Papertrey Ink. I left him uncolored, as colored pencils (keep reading) come with the gift. Why not put my little artist to work?!?

The outside of the tin was decorated very similarly to the journal and the note holder. I covered the tin with Basic Grey's Elementary paper from their Recess collection. I printed on acetate, again, for the title. For this project I cut the acetate into a long strip so that I could make it a removable band that fit around the tin. This way the tin can be used for other things once the bookplates are all gone.

And there you have it! The only other item in this gift ensemble are the colored pencils, and I didn't make those! But I did make a simple tag that I punched out from my coordinating patterned paper. I made an overlay for the tag by printing on acetate and punching out, again using a tag punch (after much swearing, it did barely punch out - not all punches are created equally when it comes to punching out acetate! Test yours on a scrap piece first!).

Thanks to all of you for your great comments on this project. It was quite fun to create and will be even more fun to give! Wouldn't this make you want to go back to school?!? Well, it's better than new underwear, anyway.

Owl Be Back...Post-it-Note Holder

This is the second item in my Owl Be Back...To School gift ensemble. This post will be much shorter, I promise! I won't go into a lot of detail about this project, as I have done it here and referenced the instructions on Angie Kennedy Juda's blog. She has a great video that you can check out for the step-by-step instructions (and she has a great southern accent!).

I used Basic Grey's Recess patterned paper on this project, as I did with the journal (see below). I covered two pieces of chipboard squares as the main part of the holder.

Once covered, I adhered a piece of cardstock inside that will act as the "hinge" mechanism to open and close the holder. (Again, you can view all the instructions and measurements on Angie's blog.) You can see how it come together, below: For the embellishments on the cover, I again used acetate (transperancy) and chipboard photo corners for the title, and stamped and cut out another owl, as as I did with the journal.

These note holders would make great teachers' gifts, or perfect when you need a "little something." Once you've made your first one, you can put them together fairly quickly. And if you don't have chipboard, try using coasters. They are the perfect size for this project. Next time...bookplate labels and tin.

Owl Be Back...To School

Although there may be some little people out there that don't want to think about it, it's gettin' to be that time...back to school! I created this gift ensemble for Papertrey Ink's monthly Guest Star Stamper contest. The set consists of several unique back-to-school supplies - not your usual scissors, paper and glue! Included in the set is a journal, Post-it-Note holder, bookplate labels with holder, and colored pencils (those will come in handy later, stay tuned). I will go through each item included in the set, but will do so in seperate posts because of the amount of detail in each item. First up is the journal.

This journal started out as a plain composition notebook. You know, the black-and-white ones that are on sale everywhere right now. They make great projects to customize, especially since the book's cover is nice and sturdy and can be covered in paper and sanded, as I've done here. I used Basic Grey's Recess collection for this project - it is just perfect as is, and needed very little embellishing. And since my goal was to incorporate the Wise Owl set from PTI, I thought the botanical touches on the paper were perfect! Of course, I needed a title for my journal. I really wanted something more creative than "Journal," so I came up with "For My Thoughts." I used this theme for naming all my other items, as you can see by the first picture ("For My Notes," etc.). Now, because I loved the paper so much and didn't want to cover it all up, I decided to print my title on acetate (transperancy) and adhere it to the cover. The trick here is to not get my glue to show through the acetate. I did that by first covering and adhering chipboard photo corners to the acetate title. Once those were in place, I strategically placed glue under the photo corners, where it wouldn't show. And because I knew I'd be placing my pencil and owl in the right-hand corner, I liberally applied adhesive there. And presto, it stuck!

And now for more embellishing! (Wait, didn't I say I didn't need much of that? Oh, well...) I created a little pencil for my owl to "ride on." To do this, I used two pieces of rectangular shaped chipboard from my stash. I taped them together to make one long rectangle and cut the end to resemble a sharpened point. The shapes were already rounded on the edges, which was perfect for the eraser end! I covered the pencil with scraps of paper. I adhered some kraft at the end, some pink at the top for the eraser, and then a piece of yellow in the middle. I tore the end of the yellow piece before adhereing it, to make it look like a real pencil that has been sharpened. The band below the eraser is a piece of scrap paper that I inked with my Cooper pigment ink pad. I scored a few lines on it with a paper piercing needle, to make it look more realistic. Finally, I drew lines on the yellow piece with a fine tip brown pen, added some black ink to the top of the pencil, and inked all the edges with brown ink. I know, a lot of work, but I think the outcome was worth it! I'm so proud of my little pencil!

I then adhered the pencil to the acetate title, lining it up with the "pencil" mark I had printed on the acetate. (When I created the title in Photoshop Elements, I "freehand" drew a squiggly line just below, for the pencil mark.)

And now let's talk about the owl. He was stamped on Kraft paper and colored in using this technique. But I couldn't leave it at that. Since this is a back-to-school projects, and it is called Wise Owl, I had to add some eyeglasses! I used gold pigment ink and gold embossing powder for that. I applied Glossy Accents on each eye to make it look even more like real eyeglasses. After it dried, I cut the owl out, inked the edges, and adhered it to the journal with foam tape, making sure his claws (feet?) rested right on the pencil. That's it, just a few simple steps and you're done with your journal (Ha!). Now you can see why I'm making this more than one post! Tune in tomorrow when I'll go through the Post-it-Note holder!Supplies for Journal:
